Just thought I’d say a quick hello and give you a brief rundown of Minutewomen Mentors. To begin with, my name is Kiara Bomben and I’m the founder of Minutewomen Mentors. This is my second year at UMass as a member of the UMass Women’s Basketball team. From a young age, I’ve always loved helping others in any way, shape or form. To me, one of the best feelings in life is to do something for another person. Since my arrival at UMass I’ve been blown away with the amount of community service we’ve done. I’ve enjoyed engaging and participating with kids from schools within the Pioneer Valley, yet I think that we can go above and beyond this. That’s why I’ve created the Minutewomen Mentors program. Instead of being a one-type-of-deal thing, it’ll be an ongoing process where stories, experiences, videos and photographs can be viewed multiple times, anytime!
With that being said, I’ve been so eager to write my first post as a Minutewomen Mentor. For the past couple of weeks now, I’ve been informing and updating my teammates on the Minutewomen Mentor’s progression; like you, they like to know what’s going on. The girl’s love the idea of helping the younger generation, especially young women. We want to really connect with and inspire the younger women in our community to understand the importance of a quality education.
By now I’m sure you’ve gathered that I’m anxious to be taking on the role as a mentor. There’s so many things that I’m looking forward to! Once the second semester of school begins, we’ll mentor girls who attend the Commerce High School in Springfield, MA. Our goal will be to assist the girl’s with their papers and to help them formulate ideas. We’ll also serve as a support system and will share experiences with them, form friendships and encourage them to go confidently in the direction of their dreams. The Minutewomen Mentors will also partake in a range of community service within Western Massachusetts.
The UMass Women’s Basketball program is glad to be apart of this and we hope you are too!
